Eric Gunther

Sanguine Art

Sanguine drawing · Graphite · Figurative art

Born in Greenwich Village, New York City, I spent my university and postgraduate years in the Catskills of Upstate New York before moving to Farmington in 2000. Drawing on the anatomy knowledge I gained through surgical training, I use the human figure as my primary subject. Whether in oil or sanguine chalk, my figures celebrate a “moment in light,” where time is suspended and self-reflection is invited. I have always been inspired by the detached reflection Thoreau experienced at Walden and Yeats described in “The Lake Isle of Innisfree.” In the poem, Yeats longs for solitude and peace far from the city: “And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow … I hear lake water lapping … I hear it in the deep heart’s core.” I strive to convey that peace through the simplicity of the human form and the warmth of evening light. My small studio in Industry provides that light and peace, where I am continually spoiled by the serenity of Clearwater Lake.
