School leadership brief

Real businesses. Real audiences. Young artists.

Wednesday, December 2, 2026 · 5:00 PM–7:00 PM · Downtown Farmington, Maine. Free community admission. An FCCW Production.

ArtWalk Farmington’s Special Kids Event gives K–12 students a real-world opportunity to share their creativity beyond the classroom. Young artists are paired with participating downtown businesses, where members of the community can meet them, see their artwork and, where agreed with the family and host, purchase work. Display-only participation is welcome; sales are optional and never guaranteed.

The organizer reports that the previous ArtWalk brought together more than 100 community members. This is an organizer-reported attendance figure, not a promise of December attendance or sales.

  • Our immediate ask: share this opportunity with families through your approved school communication channels and identify a liaison for questions.
  • Please advise us on district approval, privacy/media requirements, accessibility and any conditions for school involvement.
  • Distribution does not imply school sponsorship or endorsement. No school transport, staff supervision, student selection or financial commitment is assumed.
  • Family interest is collected directly through the online or paper form. Placement remains subject to space, suitability and confirmation with the family.

The learning opportunity

A student’s work, out in the world.

This is more than putting a picture on a wall. Students can experience how an artwork is prepared, displayed, described and received in a real community setting. A downtown business becomes a welcoming exhibition space, and neighbors become an encouraging audience.

Students can practice explaining their ideas, crediting their work, choosing titles, discussing materials, considering display needs and listening to respectful audience feedback. Families may also explore pricing and simple entrepreneurship if they choose to offer work for sale. These are educational opportunities, not a claim of formal curriculum credit.

  • Open invitation for K–12 interest, including public, independent and homeschool families; final placements depend on available space and event readiness.
  • Drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, craft, digital work and other suitable media may be proposed. Coordinators review size, safety and display compatibility.
  • The event plan calls for 2–3 young artists per location. This is an event format, not a guaranteed seat for every applicant.
  • A student may exhibit without selling. No student is required to donate artwork or sales proceeds.
  • Auction proceeds benefit the Franklin County Animal Shelter. The event’s charity auction is separate from any student’s optional art sale.

The current December lineup

Seven downtown doors open to creativity.

These are the confirmed December stops in the current ArtWalk event record, in event order. Addresses come from those event records. Students will be matched to a host after review, with arrangements confirmed privately with the family. This list is not a scale map, a required walking order or a statement that every venue has verified accessible access.

How participation works

From a family’s idea to a downtown display.

1. Express interest. A parent/guardian, or a participating student age 18 or older, completes the matching online or paper form. Tell us who the student is, what they make and what support their display needs.

2. Review and pair. Coordinators review the proposal and discuss an appropriate business pairing, space, equipment and permissions with the family. A submission is not a placement confirmation.

3. Agree on the details. The family and organizer settle arrival, installation, supervision, access, optional sales, artwork security and return of work before participation is confirmed.

4. Share the work. At the event, community visitors encounter students’ work in real businesses. Students who attend can discuss their ideas and creative process.

5. Collect and follow up. Artwork pickup and any sales proceeds are handled according to the family’s confirmed arrangement. Public recap use follows the selected permissions.

  • Sign-up timing: Not yet confirmed. Contact the coordinators before making arrangements.
  • Arrival, installation and pickup: Not yet confirmed. Contact the coordinators before making arrangements.
  • Sales arrangements: Still to confirm: family pricing approval, who handles payments, any commission, sales-tax responsibilities, artwork ownership, damage/loss arrangements and return of unsold work. Interest in selling does not authorize a transaction.

Safety, access & family expectations

Confirm responsibilities before confirming a place.

This packet invites participation; it does not establish a drop-off program or promise school-provided transportation, insurance, childcare, supervision or medical services. Families must receive the final arrangements before deciding to take part.

Supervision and transport: Still to confirm: whether a parent/approved adult must remain; no-drop-off expectations; check-in/out; who accompanies children between stops; transport; emergency response; lost-child response; and the event-day point of contact.

Accessibility: Still to verify with each venue: step-free entrance, interior display access, restroom access, seating, parking and reasonable participation adjustments. Families can raise access needs privately without disclosing a diagnosis.

  • Organizers: coordinate placements and host communication, collect permissions, communicate confirmed expectations and establish an incident/emergency plan.
  • Business hosts: confirm usable display space, safe installation, access and their role with the organizer. A host does not automatically become a child’s custodian.
  • Families: agree on attendance, responsible adult, transportation, artwork delivery and pickup once the final arrangements are provided.
  • Schools: determine their own approval, staffing, transport and media rules if choosing a formal role. None is presumed.
  • Before the event: confirm adult conduct expectations, any volunteer screening required by the participating organizations, safeguarding/reporting procedures, venue risk/insurance review and a named safety lead.

A practical request to school leaders

Choose the role that works for your school.

The Franklin County Children’s Task Force describes its work as strengthening families, with programs including 21st Century Kids, community education, Maine Families and parent education. That makes this a relevant setting for discussing family-centered community opportunities. The Task Force is not a substitute for district approval.

Regional outreach can include Mt. Blue / RSU 9; MSAD 58; Spruce Mountain / RSU 73 (including Jay); Rangeley / RSU 78; and Dirigo / RSU 56 (including Carthage). RSU 56 is the current Dirigo district identified by its official website. This is not an attendance list or an assertion that every school is participating.

  • May we distribute this invitation through your approved channels? Who grants approval and is a non-endorsement statement required?
  • Who should serve as the school/district liaison, and what is the preferred family communication process?
  • Will families apply directly, or does the school wish to nominate students using its own process and permissions?
  • If your school wants to coordinate attendance, what field-trip, insurance, transportation, staffing and volunteer requirements apply?
  • What student-name, artwork and photography permissions are needed? An existing school media release should not be assumed to cover an outside organizer.
  • What access, language, financial or other participation barriers should we plan for? Please provide district-specific requirements rather than student records.

Family sign-up & informed choices

One application. Two ways to send it.

Online: https://artwalkfarmington.com/december-kids-school-packet#family-signup. Paper: complete the two form pages in this packet and contact the coordinators to arrange a direct return. Do not post completed forms or student information publicly. A school may collect forms only if it agrees on an appropriate private handoff.

Optional permission choices are separate: exhibiting the artwork, reproducing artwork images, publishing its title, public artist credit, grade band, taking student photographs/video, and publishing those images on the website, social media or in print. An unchecked optional permission means no permission. Participation is not conditional on agreeing to publicity.

Collected by Franklin County Co-Working / ArtWalk coordinators solely to arrange the December 2, 2026 Kids ArtWalk and follow up with the family. Full names and adult contact information remain private to authorized coordinators unless the host-sharing permission above is given. No marketing enrollment and no automatic public student profile. Retention ends 2027-03-02; coordinators must delete private applications after that date. Request access, correction, a permission change or deletion through artwalkfarmington.com/contact. Schools may require their own forms; this does not replace them. Declining optional photo/name permissions does not automatically exclude artwork; coordinators will discuss an appropriate arrangement. This is a public event: organizers cannot guarantee that members of the public will not take photographs. All permissions apply only to this event and its recap.

  • Use an adult contact, not a child’s personal email or phone. No birth date, home address, ID upload or medical record is requested.
  • Select first name, an approved artist name or no public name. The online form never creates a public student profile automatically.
  • Permissions are reviewed before any use. A parent may request changes through the contact page; previously printed/distributed material may not be recoverable.
  • A family who declines photography or public credit should discuss a suitable display arrangement before placement.
